What is Wyoming's State Flower?
Wyoming State Flower - Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja
linariifolia)
Wyoming's state flower was chosen in 1917, and
is Indian paintbrush or Prairie-fire (Castilleja).
There are about 200 species. Castilleja linariifolia
has names like: Wyoming Indian paintbrush, Narrow-leaved
Indian paintbrush, desert paintbrush, Wyoming
desert paintbrush, Wyoming paintbrush, linaria-leaved
Indian Paintbrush, and Indian paint brush.
Indian Paintbrush or Painted Cup (Castilleja
linariaefolia) was adopted as the State Flower
on January 31, 1917. The roots of the painted
cups are partially parasitic on the roots of other
green plants. Their true flowers are inconspicuous,
but are commonly enveloped by bright red flower
like bracts.
