State Flowers
What is Ohio's State Flower?
Ohio State Flower - Scarlet Carnation (Dianthus
caryophyllus)
Ohio designated the Scarlet Carnation as their
state flower to memorialize United State's 25
President William McKinley. It is said that McKinley's
political opponent gave him a red carnation to
wear in his button hole during his campaign to
become a a US Represenative. He won the election
so he kept the carnation as a lucky charm. He
also wore a carnation the day he was elected.
On February 3, 1904 the Scarlet Carnation was
adopted as the official state flower of Ohio.
