State Flowers
What is Kentucky's State Flower?
Kentucky State Flower - Goldenrod (Solidago
gigantea)
The adoption of the Goldenrod as the state flower
of Kentucky was far more controversial than most.
The trumpet vine was designated as the official
symbol for the Kentucky Militia. In 1921 the Kentucky
Federation of Women's Clubs argued for the Goldenrod
to become the official state flower. The War Department,
in opposition, argued that the trumpet vine should
be designated as the state flower due to its history
with the Kentucky Militia. Nevertheless, the Goldenrod
was made the official state flower in 1926 by
a senate resolution.
