Burning Bush
Burning Bush
Q. Would you shed any light on a perennial
called "burning bush"? Thank you.
A. Burning Bush [Dictamnus albus] is probably the Biblical bush from the Mediterranean area. It secretes an oil which when a match is placed near
ignites but rather briefly. It is a perennial
hardy in zones 3-9 and needs full bright sun. Plant in a fertile
well-drained soil with compost added to enrich. Space away from other shrubs and trees to allow space to grow and provide air circulation. Once you have planted
leave there for years as for some reason
they hate disturbance. Mulching over the roots is very good to keep cool and moist. You can propagate new ones from the seeds from their fragrant summer white pink or lilac flowers.
It will grow to about 3' and an equal spread
laterally. The shrub has light green glossy
leaves and is quite frost hardy. Generally
a very easy shrub to grow given the sun
and space with good water and drainage.
Feed monthly and enjoy!
