Perennial Herbs
Ask any good cook what creates a wonderful meal
and they would reply add fresh herbs. Growing
perennial herbs is an easy way for a person to
have fresh herbs annually. The plants come back
each year. Some varieties need to be replanted
but that is typically every three years. Plan
a garden and enjoy the fun.
To begin with creating a perennial garden, one
must do a quick search of the internet. Using
a search engine is an easy way. Type in a term
such as "perennial herbs" will bring about a huge
list of options. Also there will be a list of
seed companies that can help the gardener locate
the type of plants they would like to grow. Many
companies offer free seed catalogs to give the
gardener the winter to decide what they would
like to grow.
Ordering seeds is not hard and a person can do
this online or by phone. Typically it is best
to start the seeds in the winter. Get some peat
pots or seed starters at the local garden center
if they are open. If they are not open yet, check
out the do it yourself center. Buy some soil and
start planting the seeds. Keep the baby plants
inside until the danger of frost has gone by.
Now that it is time to move the seedlings outside,
look around the yard for a location for the garden.
Typically herbs grow best in a well drained area
that receives five to six hours of sunshine per
day. Start with a small area and enlarge it each
year. Before you know it, you will have a good
size garden. Herbs are very easy to grow. They
have lots of uses so they are practical and pretty.
Get out that rototiller and cultivate the garden
location. Mix in some compost into the soil. This
adds alot of added nutrients. There are so many
perennial herbs to try like oregano, chives, mint,
thyme, lavender, aloe or even rosemary.
Remember to add a few annual herb varieties to
the garden. These will die at the end of the season.
Before they die, the plants will go to seed. Saving
the seed is a fun hobby. You can give the seeds
as gifts or use them for next year. You can direct
sow them into the soil and in no time they will
sprout.
Check out your hardiness zone. If you cannot find
what zone you are on the internet, give a quick
call to the County Extension Office. They will
be able to tell you quickly. Select herb seeds
that do well in your area. Do not pick subtropical
herbs if you live in the north. Find ones that
do well in your neck of the woods.
Creating a perennial herb garden is a wonderful
way to supply your family with fresh herbs. Perennials
are an ideal choice that will grow year after
year. Most herbs are very easy to grow. Gardens
are not difficult to create. They bring many years
of enjoyment to the owner. There are many uses
for herbs from medicinal, culinary and even aromatherapy.
Herbs can be utilized fresh or dried. They are
an asset to anyone's garden.
