Herb Gardening
The long historical use of herbs in medicine
and the culinary arts is worth continuing today,
so if you would like to establish a plot of your
own devoted to herbs read on.
Plan your garden.
Decide which types of herb you would like to grow
and if you want a permanent plan or a changing
one from year to year
How much space will they occupy in your garden?
If you want, you can purchase a book that can
give you the right information on what specific
plants you are planning to grow.
A paper plan is most important. You can then ensure
that you will not be damaging some herb when removing
shorter living ones at the end of the season.
It is a good idea to keep the annuals at the centre
of the bed and the others near the edges.
Another thing to remember is that you have to
plant the tall ones at the back and the shorter
ones in front. Also, provide your plants with
enough space to grow. Proper position shall help
you in this area.
An alternative to having herbs in the flower beds
is to grow them in herb containers. This stops
the spread of invasive herbs. One type of pot
has several holes in the sides into which different
plants can be put. A plant that requires a lot
of sun and little water can grow in the open top,
while others than need damper conditions or more
shade at lower levels.
Planting Concepts
Stone or bricks can be used to either divide or
border a square or rectangular bed. Paths also
can be used to separate the sections. Wheel or
ladder shapes might also be constructed sometimes
using the real articles and planting between the
rungs or wedges.
Of course, different plants have different needs,
but many of them require alkaline soil. This is
the reason why you have to determine the herbs
you want to plant in the planning stage. This
can more or less help you find out how you should
care for your plants. If you germinate your herbs
from seeds, remember to follow the directions
on the packet for soil, watering and temperature.
It is not difficult to grow herbs if you have
a fertile soil and ensure adequate drainage and
watering. A good harvest results if minimum requisite
conditions are met.
