Daisy Flowers
Daisy flowers, one of the prettiest flowers in
the floral world. It is most ideal gifting object
to friends and families or to be grown in your
garden.
The daisy flower used to be generally found in
the north and central Europe and different parts
of Asia. But nowadays it is grown anywhere and
everywhere. This pretty white flower is the most
popular one in the daisy family which consists
of a wide variety of flowers of different colours
and size. The daisy flower falls under the family
called Asteraceae which has around 20,000 types
of daisies under it, including even sunflower.
The common Daisy flower has white petal surrounding
a deep yellow centre. It is amusing to know that
a single daisy flower actually comprises of two
flowers. The central yellow disk floret and the
white ray like florets are the two flowers which
gives the appearance of one. They have evergreen
leaves that form a rosette arrangement. The stem
of the flowers that usually grow upto 10 cm is
leafless and it supports only a single flower.
Daisy flowers have a tendency to spread at an
immense rate, and at times not even controlled
by mowing. Hence despite their beautiful appearance,
they are considered as a weed for this reason.
They open up during day time and close at night
hence the name, the day’s eye.
Daisy flowers can be easily grown from seeds.
It can be seeded directly into the flowerbed.
They should be given sufficient water and manure
to make the soil rich. Daisies are often not troubled
by diseases. Incase this happens, treat them with
a fungicide. Daisy flowers are spread by insects
which is why the flower attracts numerous insects
in the mornings when it blooms.
This pretty little flower symbolises pure love,
innocence and purity. Daisy flowers are used by
small children to make garlands. It is a popular
game started in France, ‘love me, love me not’
where people pluck out the petals of the daisy
flower to find out of their object of love reciprocates
the love.
The common daisy has astringent properties which
were used in traditional medicines. Infact certain
types of daisies were known to have medicinal
properties that could give relief from cough,
indigestion and even heal wounds. The leaves of
daisy flower are used in salads and the flower
itself used in making herbal tea and honey. They
are an important form of nutrition for cattle
and worms. It is a rich source of Vitamin C and
other minerals, hence never dangerous to human
beings.
