North Dakota's decision stands out for how it was made: rather than a legislative debate, schoolchildren across the state voted for their favorite bloom. The wild prairie rose won easily, its pink petals and bright yellow stamens a familiar sight along roadsides and undisturbed prairie throughout the state.
