Mississippi schoolchildren voted overwhelmingly for the magnolia as the state's floral emblem back in 1900, but no legislation formally confirmed the choice for over five decades — the magnolia didn't become official until 1952. The wait didn't reflect any real doubt about the flower's popularity, just how long ceremonial designations could sit unresolved.
