How to Grow Mushrooms
Growing edible mushrooms at home is far more approachable than it sounds, especially with a pre-inoculated grow kit that takes most of the guesswork out of the process.
Starting with a Grow Kit
Oyster and shiitake mushroom kits, which come pre-inoculated with mushroom spawn in a growing medium, are by far the easiest entry point for a beginner. Simply following the kit's instructions — usually cutting an opening in the bag and misting regularly — produces a first flush of mushrooms within one to two weeks.
Most mushrooms need high humidity and indirect light rather than the bright, direct sun other plants crave, since they're fungi rather than true plants.
Caution: Only grow mushroom varieties from a trusted, verified kit or spawn source — never attempt to grow or identify wild mushroom species for eating, since misidentification can be seriously dangerous.
Getting Multiple Harvests
After the first flush of mushrooms is harvested, keeping the growing block moist and misted often produces a second and even third flush over the following weeks, though each successive harvest is usually smaller than the last.
