Growing Conditions
Heather wants acidic, well-draining soil and full sun, closely mimicking the moorland conditions it naturally grows in across the British Isles and northern Europe. Soil that's too alkaline or overly rich often causes heather to struggle, even when watering and light are otherwise correct.
Its low, spreading habit makes heather an excellent ground cover or edging plant, particularly effective in mass plantings.
Mixing summer-blooming and winter-blooming heather varieties in the same bed keeps color going nearly year-round in the right climate.
Pruning for Longevity
A light shearing right after flowering keeps heather compact and encourages fuller growth, preventing the woody, leggy look that untended heather can develop over time.
