Favorite Garden Bulbs

Favorite Bulbs Hero

Bulbs deliver some of the most reliable, low-effort color a garden can offer — plant once in fall, and enjoy a reliable spring show for years with almost no ongoing care.

Classic Spring Choices

Tulips and daffodils remain the most popular spring bulbs, offering an enormous range of colors and bloom times that can stagger a garden's display across several weeks. Crocuses often bloom even earlier, sometimes pushing through late snow to offer the very first color of the season.

Daffodils have the added benefit of being deer- and rodent-resistant, since their bulbs contain a natural toxin most animals avoid.

QUICK TIP

Plant bulbs in fall, six to eight weeks before the ground freezes, to give roots time to establish before winter dormancy sets in.

Layering for Extended Bloom

Planting bulbs at different depths in the same area — a technique called bulb lasagna — lets multiple varieties bloom in succession from the same small planting space.
