Delaware's State Flower: Peach Blossom

Delaware adopted the peach blossom (Prunus persica) as its state flower in 1895, when the state's peach orchards numbered in the hundreds of thousands.

Delaware Hero

A Flower Built on Commerce

By the late 1800s, Delaware was home to roughly 800,000 peach trees, and the fruit's export revenue made it an economic backbone of the state. Choosing the peach blossom as the state flower was as much a tribute to that industry as to the bloom itself — a soft pink flower that opens on bare branches before the leaves emerge each spring.

QUICK FACT

A blight later devastated Delaware's peach orchards, but the flower has remained the state's official symbol ever since.
