Cutworms
A simple cardboard collar physically blocks cutworms from reaching a seedling's stem — no spray needed for this one, just a barrier.
Prep: 15 minutes
Yields: 1 collar per plant

Materials
Toilet paper or paper towel tubes, cut into 2-inch rings
Scissors
Instructions

Cut cardboard tubes into 2-inch rings, one for each seedling you’re protecting.

Slide a ring around each seedling stem at planting time, pushing it about an inch into the soil.

Leave the collar in place until the stem toughens up, usually a few weeks after transplanting.

Remove and discard collars once plants are established and no longer vulnerable.
Tip: Cutworms only need a couple of inches of protection since they feed right at the soil line — the collar doesn't need to be tall.
