Nectar Plants for Adults
Coneflower, zinnia, butterfly bush, and lantana are all reliable nectar sources that draw adult butterflies in. Planting in sunny drifts rather than single scattered plants makes a bed far more visible and appealing to passing butterflies.
Host Plants for Caterpillars
Milkweed is essential for monarch caterpillars, which eat nothing else; parsley, dill, and fennel host swallowtail caterpillars. A real butterfly garden needs to accept some chewed leaves on these host plants as a sign the garden is working as intended, not a pest problem to spray away.
Skip the Pesticides
Even organic insecticides can harm butterflies and their caterpillars along with the pests they're meant to target. A butterfly garden works best alongside a hands-off approach to pest control, tolerating some damage in exchange for the wildlife it supports.
