Common Causes
Sudden temperature swings, low humidity, thrips damage, and inconsistent watering are among the most frequent causes of bud blast in roses, camellias, and peonies. A sudden cold snap or unusually dry stretch right as buds are forming is a particularly common trigger.
Checking for Thrips
Thrips are tiny, slender insects that feed inside developing buds and are a common hidden cause of bud blast, especially on roses. Gently pulling apart an affected bud, or tapping it over white paper, can reveal these nearly invisible pests.
Supporting Steady Conditions
Consistent watering, avoiding sudden fertilizer changes, and protecting plants from unexpected cold snaps during bud formation all reduce the stress that leads to bud blast. Most affected plants recover fully and bloom normally the following season.
