In the early 1900s, apple orchards across the Ozarks made Arkansas one of the country's most productive apple-growing regions, and the choice of state flower reflected that industry as much as the plant's beauty. The blossom itself is soft pink fading to white, with green foliage, blooming for a short window each spring before the fruit sets.
