Anthurium's glossy, heart-shaped flower is actually a waxy modified leaf called a spathe, wrapped around a slender central spike — a bloom so long-lasting it can stay fresh for months at a stretch.
Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, anthurium is a popular tropical houseplant thanks to its glossy foliage and near-constant flowering, often sold as "flamingo flower" for its curved, brightly colored blooms.
Anthurium wants bright, indirect light, high humidity, and a chunky, well-draining aroid mix. Letting the top inch of soil dry between waterings and misting occasionally recreates the humid, filtered-light conditions of its rainforest understory habitat.
All parts of anthurium are mildly toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of curious pets and small children, and wear gloves when repotting to avoid skin irritation from its sap.
